What is textile finishing? ow textile finishing takes fabric quality and functionality to the next level

Textile finishing is a very broad term and refers to a lot of different treatments that textiles can undergo in order to meet certain properties. Different goals can be pursued with these treatments. The aim may be both to improve the functional properties of textiles through textile finishing, but equally the mechanical or aesthetic properties.

We think for example of water repellency, improving fire retardancy, increasing durability, increasing softness etc. Depending on a certain use of the end product, we will have to see which treatments and which techniques are the most efficient and suitable, as there are many techniques available for textile finishing. Thanks to these treatments, the fabrics or materials will perform better in their specific applications and will become more attractive and durable for consumers.

Finipur, a trendsetter since 1978 in textile finishing

Finipur in Deerlijk (Belgium) has built up a lot of expertise as a textile finisher over the past decades. This activity started in 1978, first under the name Steverlynck and since 2007 under the name Finipur. Over the last 15 years in particular, we at Finipur have been 100% committed to innovation, efficiency, flexibility and sustainability. As a result, we have become a fixture when it comes to textile finishing. Discover on our website all our techniques at our disposal, as well as all the sectors in which we operate today.

The textile finishing sector is constantly changing. Customer requirements are constantly changing, standards are becoming stricter, the environmental impact is becoming increasingly important, certain raw materials can or must no longer be used ... In short, a lot of challenges that mean we have to keep adapting flexibly to reality. This flexibility in coatings and techniques is Finipur's strength. We invest continuously in R&D and our machinery in order to respond to the demands of our customers and the market.

The future of textile finishing?

According to Finipur, the future of textile finishing lies in the following trends:

1. Environmentally friendly and sustainable production processes

Older production techniques using harmful chemicals are no longer accepted. They create a very negative and significant impact on everyone's life, from consumers and workers to our fauna and flora. It is therefore very important to develop new innovative techniques that no longer require these harmful chemicals but can still achieve the same performance.

2. Reducing water consumption and energy use

Processing raw materials from fibre to finished textiles uses a lot of water. Gas consumption, as well as electricity consumption, is also considerable and thus has quite a big environmental impact. Water is scarce and so every litre less consumed is a litre gained. At Finipur, we use water very efficiently. We have a zero discharge status where wastewater is reused as much as possible. The latest machine technology ensures efficient energy consumption and more than 2,500 solar panels on our roofs provide green energy.

3. PFC and PFAS-free coatings

PFC and PFAS are used in numerous water- and stain-repellent coatings. These are harmful to the environment, local residents and the users of the end products. Therefore, in recent years there has been a real shift towards PFC and PFAS-free alternatives and products that ensure less impact on the environment. Here too, Finipur is a trendsetter and together with our suppliers, we look for the best alternatives.

4. Circular economy and recycling

Both legislators and consumers are increasingly pushing the textile sector towards the circular economy. Reducing waste and reusing materials is very important in this. For example, new technologies are being developed to better recycle used textile products. We also use the Cradle-to-Cradle principle. This concept focuses on developing products that are fully recyclable or biodegradable.

5. Advanced production techniques

Finipur has been a trendsetter for many years when it comes to innovative production techniques in textile finishing. Thus, we have ongoing projects in nanotechnology, smart techniques, microcapsule technology, 3D Fabrics etc. Be sure to contact us for your innovative projects.
