Direct Coating in Textile Finishing: Precision, Functionality and Sustainability
In textile finishing, direct coating is one of the most efficient methods for imparting specific functional properties to fabrics and substrates, such as fire retardancy, UV and weather resistance, oil and grease resistance, etc. Finipur has many years of expertise in direct coating and extensive machinery in this field. Together with its suppliers, Finipur develops coatings and solutions that precisely meet the requirements of the end application.
Process and technology in direct coating
In direct coating, a polymer compound in liquid form is applied directly to the substrate using a coating knife or roller system. The layer thickness of this coating can be controlled very precisely, depending on the desired barrier, mechanical resistance or aesthetics. At Finipur, we work with water-based compounds..
After coating, the textile is passed through a drying and curing process (drying oven or stretching frame), which permanently bonds the coating to the fibre structure. This direct application makes it possible to:
- Achieve variable layer thicknesses from a few microns to several hundred microns.
- Produce homogeneous and porous coatings, depending on the breathable or sealing effect.
- Combine multifunctional properties in a single coating layer.
Direct coating: functional properties and areas of application
The choice of polymer (PU, acrylic, silicone, fluorine-free alternative, etc.) and additives determines the final performance required. Possible properties include:
- Hydrostatic pressure resistance for waterproof applications.
- Oil, grease and chemical resistance for industrial or medical applications.
- Abrasion resistance and tear resistance through mechanical reinforcement of the substrate.
- Flame retardant performance in accordance with standards from various sectors, such as EN 13501 or BS5852.
- UV and weather resistance for outdoor applications where sun, rain, wind, etc. are important factors in the ageing process of the treated textile.
Areas of application
Direct coating offers a wide range of applications and is therefore used in many sectors. Below is a summary of some of the many sectors:
- Technical textiles: filters, protective clothing, automotive and industrial membranes.
- Interior textiles: furniture fabrics with high wear resistance and ease of maintenance.
- Outdoor & sports: waterproof and breathable materials for tents, backpacks and sportswear.
- Medical sector: barrier textiles for mattresses, pillows and protective covers.
Thanks to our knowledge of materials, process control and innovative R&D, Finipur can support customers in the development of coated textiles that meet both technical specifications and sustainability requirements.
